Early Tuscan gardens were designed as a simple and serene place for the owner to retreat from the from hectic city life. Around the time of the Renaissance and Baroque periods, they became more elaborate symbols of power, ornamented with rare plants, sought out sculptures and elements that introduced water into the landscape. Bringing together natural and artificial elegance, the goal of these gardens was to recreate Paradise on Earth, an achievable Utopia.
